Animal Ask is looking to appoint an Operations Lead to our team to assist our work in maximising the impact of animal welfare asks.

Animal Ask has been founded with the express aim to optimise and prioritise farmed animal welfare asks. We conduct in-depth research, narrowly targeted at key decisions between different animal asks, supporting animal charities, donors, policymakers, and governments so that they may do more good in the long term.

Billions of animals suffer on factory farms every year. The animal advocacy movement has so far done great work to help alleviate animal suffering, building up expertise in both public and corporate campaigns.

The foundation of these campaigns is what is referred to as an ask. This is the specific request for industry, food companies, or the government to improve the welfare of animals in their care e.g. asking the UK government to ban cages for laying hens. These animal welfare asks are implemented over a set period and if successful, can change the lives of millions of animals. However, not all asks are equally impactful - good prioritisation of potential asks can greatly increase the effectiveness of the movement efforts.

Over the past 18 months we have produced a number of extensive reports, the results of which could see our optimal recommended asks changing the lives of millions of animals. With your help, we will continue our operations in a professional and sustainable manner. This role will shape the organisation’s long-term policies and culture.

Given the impressive level of effort and resources animal advocacy organisations currently put behind each ask, we think that supporting our community in prioritising the best asks is key and you would play an integral role in supporting this mission.

You will take the lead on all things ops within Animal Ask, liaising closely with the co-founders to ensure we are reaching our operational targets and organisational goals.

You will work alongside the co-founding team, research scientist and research analyst.

Responsibilities include:

  • Developing and improving Animal Ask’s policies and standard operating procedures, e.g. hiring, onboarding, and staff benefits.

  • Leading on the establishment and maintenance of operations and financial systems.

  • Overseeing budgets, accounts, and ensuring that auditing processes are conducted efficiently.

  • Leading on the maintenance of task management software and organising internal storage of research.

  • Coordinating with Animal Ask staff and external institutions to ensure ongoing compliance with relevant regulations, including relating to company regulations, employment law, and data privacy.

  • Further projects according to Animal Ask’s needs as well as your time availability, interests, and expertise.

This job will involve rapid learning and application of knowledge, including technical skills and domain specific knowledge. This job is a great opportunity for someone looking to lead a department and establish a long-term career in the EA or animal advocacy movement.
