THE PROBLEM

Each year billions of non-human animals are born into the human-made system of animal agriculture. The majority spend their life confined in factory farms with as little space as is allowed to maximize production efficiency and profit. In these conditions, many are afflicted with diseases or injured, either through neglect or as their bodies are pushed beyond their biological limits to physiological extremes for the sake of productivity.

This is not even to mention the countless companion, liminal and wild-animals each with different relationships and interactions with human communities. 

 

The animal advocacy movement is working to provide protection and consideration for animals using a wide variety of approaches. Some groups target consumers aiming to boycott animal products reducing their production; others target the institutions responsible to reduce the cruelty of the system and reduce its efficiency.

 

There is a wide range in the potential impact of the approaches or campaign goals pursued by organisations. Carefully considered and strategically targeted campaigns have the potential to have a huge impact on the systems they attempt to reform and ultimately abolish. While, sub-optimal campaign selection can result in either failing to improve the system as much as it could have been or, in some cases, being actively harmful due to lack of research into the effects of a policy. 

 

Identifying the best approaches and goals is one of the most important decisions the movement faces, particularly given the amount of expertise and time that is devoted to achieving their campaign goals. Decision-relevant research is essential to ensure that advocacy organisations are as informed as possible and most able to strategically focus their advocacy efforts.

ABOUT ANIMAL ASK

Animal Ask is a research consultancy that aims to address this problem, supporting the global animal advocacy movement in its efforts to oppose animal exploitation. We achieve this by providing organisations and funders with research that assists them in making informed decisions about their advocacy efforts. Reallocating existing campaign resources and talent to the areas with the greatest potential for impact, exploring and unlocking new campaign opportunities in neglected regions or markets.

HOW YOU WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE

You will contribute to our research to help inform the strategy of advocacy groups in several key regions around the world through our ask prioritisation program. Your work will span across a variety of domains from economic analysis of production and trade of animal products, the impacts of tax policy, investment, finance or even the market dynamics for alt-proteins. Though the majority of your time will likely be spent modeling the effects of reforms for farmed animals. 

 

Your work will directly inform our evaluations of interventions and policy reforms across the globe helping to identify the highest impact economically feasible reforms for animals. 

 

Given the impressive level of effort and resources animal advocacy organisations currently put behind each ask, we think that supporting our community in prioritising the best asks is key and you would play an integral role in supporting this mission.


ABOUT THE ROLE

Responsibilities could include:

 

  • Estimating the economic impacts of animal welfare reforms on the cost of production in neglected regions or for novel reforms

  • Modeling market shocks on the trade and consumption of animal products

  • Modeling the effect of welfare reforms on the consumption of animal products 

  • Evaluating the impact of product market regulation on the development and consumption of alternative proteins 

 

This job will involve rapid learning and application of knowledge, including technical skills (e.g. programming in R, and creating cost-effectiveness analysis) and domain specific knowledge.

​

ESSENTIAL

  • Undergraduate degree in Economics

  • Quickly able to analysis and condense information from a variety of research methods and sources into decision relevant summaries 

  • Ability to critically assess and weight scientific literature and a wide variety of other sources of evidence on new topics 

  • Open mindedness driving a high willingness to update based on new evidence

  • Good written communication skills and a high degree of reasoning transparency

  • Fluent in written and spoken English

  • Highly impact-driven

  • Able to work autonomously in a small team

BONUS FOR

  • A postgraduate degree in economics or a closely related quantitative discipline 

  • Experience using equilibrium models

  • Experience creating and evaluating cost-effectiveness analyses (CEAs)

  • Originating from Latin America, Africa or Asia 

  • Knowledgeable about effective altruism

  • Experience creating and evaluating cost-effectiveness analyses (CEAs)

APPLICATION PROCESS

The application process will consist of: 

​

  • Application form (10 minutes)  

  • Task 1 (30 Minutes)  

  • Task 2 (2.5 hours) 

  • Interview (30 minutes)

  • Task 3 (5 hours)

Each stage should take about one week to finalise selection in early December this could be subject to change depending on the availability of both internal staff and applicants. We can provide compensation for later test tasks for those with greater financial difficulty upon request.
